PLOT c/6A5Q-55 · version 1
The writer reports sandy shell-beds near the Williamstown Racecourse, made of shells of living species and laid by wind and tide, as evidence that the shore was building out.
The author discussed the occurrence of the sandy shell-beds exposed near the Williamstown Racecourse, on the Altona Bay railway line, which have been regarded as evidence of an elevated sea-bottom, but he pointed out that the evidence of the surround- ing locality showed that a gradual reclamation of the sea shore was taking place, and that the origin of the beds was no doubt wind and tide, and that they were geologically of Recent age. This was shown by the fact of their being almost entirely com- posed of the shells of living species. Historical passage
