How complete is PLOT?

PLOT is a shared record of nature: species, habitats, places, and the organisations and sites that affect them. This page shows how much of it PLOT can describe so far, and how much of that a person has checked. It’s a measure of the record, not of nature: a well-described place isn’t necessarily a healthy one.

A share only means something against a list of everything there is. These are official lists, each dated and linked to where it came from. The bars run from pale (PLOT only knows the name) to dark (it’s ready for action).

What PLOT can show about something

Everything on PLOT sits on the same ladder. A level is about the record, not about nature: a species at the top may be in steep decline, and PLOT can show you the evidence.

The single most useful thing is a source: a report, survey, plan or official page about something on this page that PLOT doesn't hold, or holds only at L0 or L1. A person at PLOT checks every one before it counts.

The rules

How the counting works

Every night a program checks each entry against the same written tests, and puts it on the highest level whose tests it passes. Nobody types the levels in.
Only facts a person has approved count, or facts from a source PLOT trusts for that purpose (the trust register). A fact is “sourced” when it links to a published source you can open.
Each kind of thing has its own tests: a council isn’t measured like a frog. They’re all below, and changing them needs PLOT’s owner to approve a new version.
A share is only ever given against an official list. Where there isn’t one, PLOT gives counts and says “no denominator defined”.
