Which sources PLOT relies on, and for what

PLOT doesn't re-check every record from a source it trusts. It decides once what the source is authoritative for, and checks every update: data files are compared row by row by code, and web pages by a person checking a sample. Claims from these sources say “from an approved source”, not Reviewed.

We checked that the source says it, not that it's true on the ground. Claims from these sources aren't marked Reviewed; a person reviews anything used in a published number as well.

When a check fails

The whole update is held. Nothing from it appears until the cause is fixed and the check passes again. Data files are compared in full by code; web pages and documents are checked by a person on a sample. A sample of 50 with no errors shows, with 95% confidence, that fewer than about 6.0% of the batch is wrong (the rule of three). It doesn't show there are none.
